This bas-relief is directly inspired from the World of Tolkien, and from sketches of illustrator John Howe.
A scale-1 model in clay is done first, to define the dimensions and volumes of the sculpture. This model is then molded in plaster, to get a stable 3D reference, which can be used as long as needed. The plaster model is obtained by casting at “lost model and lost cast”, since the clay model and the plaster cast are destroyed during demolding processes.
This reference is used to report all dimensions on the wood and define zones to trim. After milling, the full sculpture is worked with gouges, frequently referring to the plaster model to check measures. Down to the fine details : face, signs on the armour, hands, friezes.
To secure stability, a wood filler is applied and leveled with iron wool and brush. Last finishing is done with a mix of waxes (mineral, vegetable and bee). The finishing patina is based on Judea bitumen and bronze powder.
