Linden, pine and gold leaves
Sculpted in linden wood, then assembled on a pine chassis, the mirror frame has been gilded in a traditional way, a tempera. This method requires more than twelve steps, described below. After a cleaning with ammonia and a first layer of rabbit-skin based glue, 12 layers of a mix of Paris white and of glue are sequentially deposited, with 2 to 5 hours of drying between each layer. The initial patterns are revealed and re-amplified in this dry load. Then textures and carved elements are added to give depth and vibes to the object. After coating with ochres, the gold foil is then deposited on the surface after wetting to activate the glue. The excess is removed and the remaining holes are filled ! The ochres help to mask the holes remaining through the gold leaves and generate a shiny effect after some polishing with agate stone. The very last step is to age the gilt, to paint the untreated parts, and … to find a place to install the mirror.
